What is a free campsite in Japan?

A campsite provided free of charge, usually by a municipality or a local body. The pitch itself is free, but some sites still ask for a cleaning contribution, a parking fee or a rubbish-disposal fee. Always check the site's own official information beforehand.

Do free campsites still need a reservation?

Often, yes. Many free campsites still require a booking or a written notice of use. Some can be used without any reservation, but checking in advance is the only way to be sure you can get in.

Can I sleep in a campervan or in my car?

Some sites allow sleeping in a vehicle or driving onto the pitch, but the rules differ site by site. Look for the campervan mark on each campsite page — we add it only where official information confirms it.

Can I make an open fire?

Most free campsites ban fires directly on the ground. Bring a fire stand and a fireproof mat, and follow the site's own rules, including taking your charcoal home.

What should a first-timer look for?

Start with toilets and a water tap. Mobile phone reception matters for safety too. Until you are used to it, a campsite inside a park with staff passing through is easier than a wild site with no facilities at all.

What else should I watch out for?

Free campsites close at short notice for bad weather, bear sightings or construction work. There is often no resident manager, so the state of the place depends on the people using it. Take your rubbish home, and check the latest official information before you leave.

What counts as free

A free campsite is run by a municipality or another public body and costs nothing to stay at — or nothing beyond a small contribution towards upkeep. We list a site here only when official information, a municipal page or a notice on site says it is free. Many of them have minimal facilities, so preparation matters more than at a paid site.

If free is not a hard requirement, ¥1,000–2,000 opens up far more sites with staff, toilets and a water tap. Seefree and budget campsites (1045). The price band is the minimum unavoidable total for one adult, one tent, one night, including any mandatory parking fee.
