Booking and registration are different

A site without advance booking may still require registration or a permit. Plan for the actual reception location and hours.

Kiritappu is in eastern Hokkaido; Kitaoi and Sai no Kawara are on Okushiri Island. They illustrate different rules, not nearby fallback sites for the same evening.

Kiritappu: register at the hot-spring facility

The 2026 notice lists tent and vehicle overnight stays as free with no advance booking. Apply at Kiritappu Onsen Yuyu for a permit; the campground office cannot process applications.

The 2026 season is June 10 to October 12. Bungalows have separate fees and booking rules. This is not a promise of next year’s season.

Okushiri: compare vehicle access

Okushiri Town lists free use and late April through the end of October for Kitaoi and Sai no Kawara. Check the season before considering a winter visit.

Kitaoi permits car camping when space is available, first come. Sai no Kawara directs vehicle overnight stays to the parking area. Vehicle access to a tent pitch and parking-area overnight permission are separate rules.

Prepare for water and waste arrangements

The town states that campsites have no resident managers, requires waste to be taken away and prohibits ground fires. Sai no Kawara has no night lighting.

The same guide says water at Unimaru NONA BASE is unsuitable for drinking. A cooking-area tap does not establish potable water.

Use the map, then confirm the source

Use the Hokkaido list to compare locations. Unknown conditions are not treated as absent, and no booking does not waive registration.

Recheck dates, reception, vehicle rules, water and waste. This guide compares official documents rather than personal overnight experience.
