How this list is built. Elevation of 800m or more, measured from Geospatial Information Authority of Japan elevation tiles (one pixel 15m). We do not say it is cool — we have not measured temperature and it changes with the weather. Air temperature is generally said to drop about 0.6°C per 100m of elevation, but that is a rule of thumb. We do not judge by the campsite name.
Prices and opening status change. Always check the official information before you travel. “Official site on file” means we know the URL — it does not mean we have verified every price and facility written there.

Check before you go
- Booking and check-in — Booking rules differ from site to site. 1 here are confirmed as not needing a reservation; check the rest on the official page.
- Rubbish — Some sites have no bins and ask campers to take all rubbish home. Bring bags and follow the site's rules.
- Toilets and water — Confirmed so far: toilets at 8, a water tap at 8. Where nothing is confirmed, bring enough drinking water and plan for the worst case.
- Season and closures — Some sites close in winter or open only for part of the year, and status can change. Check the opening period on the official page.
- Cold nights at altitude — Air temperature drops by roughly 0.6°C for every 100 m you climb, so nights can be cold even in summer. Pack warm layers and a sleeping bag rated for the elevation.
