How this list is built
Campsites named by two or more independent Japanese round-up articles (4 sites). Several pages from the same publication count as one.
We do not pad the count. Making it “23 best” would mean adding sites we have no basis for. Objective sky-brightness data (the Ministry of the Environment’s night-sky survey) is published only as PDF and we have not been able to take it in yet. When we can, a darkness figure goes here.
Elevation comes straight from our records, but height is no guarantee of a dark sky.
